The 702 Vegas Went On A Red Light District Tour
To fully understand what the Red Light District tour was all about, The 702 Vegas went on the tour with Jami Rodman, the Founder of Las Vegas Guided Tours.
We started our tour near the Carousel Bar in front of The Plaza and eventually made it over to the end at El Cortez Hotel & Casino. We made a few stops along the way, weaving in and out of a few downtown casinos to check out some things that maybe most people don’t notice or realize is there.
While walking, Rodman shared true stories from the past – how brothels made their way to Vegas, some of the famous Rat Pack hangouts, how the madams of the brothels ran their businesses, and much more.
Some Red Light District History That Many Might Not Realize
Every stop along the way taught a new lesson about Sin City’s early days. Learning about underground tunnels, which casinos were mob-run, seeing vintage slot machines up close, and learning the ins and outs of certain historical moments will make you look at Fremont Street and the surrounding area slightly different.
“It’s always nice when people want to learn the history of the city, because it’s a really unique city in a lot of ways,” Rodman told The 702 Vegas. “There’s not a lot of places in the world like this.”
Before we even started our tour, Rodman started sharing historical facts from way back when the city was first formed.
“Nevada and Las Vegas got started a little bit later than most cities. Most cities in the west got started around the mid-1800s, but not here. It was just a dry, dusty spot in the desert,” she explained. “It was a stop on the old Spanish trail.”
Talking About The Brothels And Speakeasies In The Red Light District

Rodman shared some of the history behind how brothels and speakeasies got their start in Vegas. She went into detail about how the brothels worked, how men would find them, and even showed some photos from back then.
One video she showed us explained that “high-end brothels were pricey at $5-15 per visit.”
Rodman shared some information about speakeasies on Instagram, “Liberty’s Last Stand — the final speakeasy to open before Prohibition ended. It almost brought Las Vegas to its knees. Undercover FBI agents had it wiretapped while bootlegged alcohol was coming in from North Vegas. The ultimate twist of irony? The place was rented from none other than the boss of the city’s red light district, Block 16, who owned a shrimp stand down the street.”
